Stage 1 Lessons

We have put together some guidance to help you understand what we aim to achieve together throughout the key swimming stages from stage 1 through to stage 4 and what you can do to help.

Stage 1 – Our aims are;

  • To be comfortable and confident in the water
  • Being at ease with getting their head wet and submerging
  • Performing a star float on their front and back
  • Perform a push and glide from the wall on their front
  • Perform a sequence of 10 kicks on front or back

What we will do

In stage 1 we will start with confidence building games and movements, with an emphasis on fun and enjoyment in the water. From there we will start working on shapes and body positions that will promote floating unaided, then building in effective leg kicks. We learn at a pace suited to your child’s individual needs ensuring extremely high standards at all times.

Things you can do when the family go swimming

We can fully appreciate the difficulties of finding the time to go swimming and furthermore getting your child to practice skills they are working on in lessons. However the more time you can all spend in the water the better it is, especially in the early stages of swimming. So here are a few tips to help you out;

  • Make things into games and challenges e.g. challenge your child to put their head underwater for 3 seconds or be a treasure hunter and look for treasure underwater
  • Show your child that you’re prepared to do what you’re asking them to do
  • Promote putting face in the water and blowing bubbles
  • Be positive and have fun!!
